Trials and Tribulations of owning a small store in NOTL

The trials and tribulations of owning a small shop in Niagara-on-the-Lake.

Written by a previous store owner we know.

In a previous lifetime, we were owners of a small niche shop called The Silver Screen…(maybe some of you may remember this store).  We purchased this shop from a wonderful man David, who started this unique idea with his mother.  After 10 years he decided to move on but established what was one of the most clever and unique shops we have ever seen and we instantly fell in love.  I left my job to start this wonderful and crazy journey.  The shop was mostly known for classic dvds, but also sold movie memorabilia such as
Wizard of Oz, John Wayne, Audrey, Marilyn, Elvis and other classic pop culture items.  Working seven days a week, 364 days a year was often very challenging and exhausting however, the people we
met on this wonderful three year journey made the ride more bearable.  There was something about being in old town that was magical and seeing guests walk around in wonder admiring all Niagara-on-the-Lake’s
beauty made it worth our hours worked.

What are some of our most memorable moments?

Oh..the people you meet.

Having a mother and daughter walk in asking if we had the movie “Rose Marie” with Nelson Eddy and Jeanette MacDonald and literally crying when we took it off the shelf and placed in her hands…apparently this movie brought her grandmother and mother back to speaking terms years ago after a family dispute.  Another person picking up their special order the Dead Zone, ordered because he was a Stephen King an.  When I told him the movie was ctually filmed in Niagara-on-the-Lake he was astonished! Yes you can see the
famous clock tower, the gazebo, and the house where most of the movie took place…(the gazebo has since been rebuilt after we sold the store) but such an amazing story to tell guests from all over the world!  We had a few famous people come in and say how much they loved our store, supported us and came back on a yearly basis.  We looked forward to seeing familiar faces.

Christmas Time

Christmas Time was one of our favourite times of the year.  It brought out memories of joy of people walking along the street that is lined with Christmas decorations going from store to store, carrying parcels as if out of a Norman Rockwell painting (or a Tricia Romance Painting!)”  We would have guests come into our store see the movie “It’s a Wonderful Life” playing and relive childhood memories. The stories that would be shared in the store were romantic and heartfelt.  The Annual Santa Claus parade is the highlight of the Niagara region and is a must to enjoy.  Many visitors staying with Niagara Holiday Rentals would book the Rotary House Holiday Tour and pop in and say hello.

Although we miss the people, the store and all Niagara-on-the-Lake has to offer, we are happy to have had this experience in our lives and have many many more stories and memories.

What was hard?

Working 7 days a week, 364 days a year, pretty tough, not a lot of time off, trying to compete with large box stores, which is why we appreciated every, single, sale.  Would we do it again?? Who knows mabye!!
